Take a Stand at the Amber Rose SlutWalk

Because we’re all sick of having to carry these damn signs.

Ladies, leave your oppression at home. This week marks the 2nd annual Amber Rose SlutWalk in downtown Los Angeles, a not-for-profit event playing a monumental role in the movement towards ending sexual injustice, gender inequality, and victim blaming. The day festival encourages attendees to come together in its all-inclusive space, raise awareness about the injustices women face, and, in Amber’s own words, “wear what the F [they] want.” Shifting the paradigm of rape culture sounds like a damn good way to spend your Saturday if you ask us.

So, what IS a SlutWalk? In 2011, a Toronto police officer gave this piece of advice to York University about preventing campus rape: “Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” Tired of being oppressed by slut-shaming, Sonya Barnett and Heather Jarvis (co-founders of the original SlutWalk) have since made it their mission to redefine the word “slut” as a woman in control of her own sexuality. Since then, SlutWalks have become one of the most successful global feminist actions in recent history, with people of all backgrounds organizing walks in their own countries.

One in four college women has survived rape/attempted rape in her lifetime. Ninety seven percent of rapists are never incarcerated. An LGBT prisoner has a 15 times greater chance of being sexually assaulted. Rape can affect anyone regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. If these facts scare the hell out of you the way they scare the hell out of us, come join us this weekend and help foster a safer space for those who deserve it (a.k.a. all of us).

This year’s Amber Rose SlutWalk features a 2-block march through downtown L.A., art installations, free breast exams and HIV testing, and live performances by Trina, Mariah Lynn, Joanne the Scammer (!!!), and more. We’ll be there covering the festivities on Snapchat and we wanna see you there, too, so we’re hooking you up with a free ticket.  Head over to Slut Walk’s official website, enter the promo code “THANKYOUFLIRT” at checkout, and get to work on your best picket sign.
